Programs

I have spent a long time finding the absolute best applications available on the internet. I only post open-source or free software. Each Program node has a screenshot, a license field, compatible operating systems, and a link to the company's website. Rating is enabled.

Anybody familiar with incremental backup knows that the de facto standard of backup utilities is a program called rsync. This is an unfortunate truth for Windows user's however because rsync is primarily a unix/linux application. DeltaCopy is a Windows backup program that takes advantage of rsync.

Find and Run Robot 2

Find and Run Robot 2
Download Link: Find and Run Robot

Find and Run Robot 2 is the fastest application launcher for Windows I have ever used. Google Desktop fails in comparison when it comes to speed, and it doesn't make my CPU go crazy when indexing like Launchy. After adding a new directory to the list of folders to index, FARR picked up on the files I was searching for in less than a second. It really is stunningly fast. It registers on my machine as only taking up 12MB of RAM.

Disk Defrag

Disk Defrag

Every once in a while I'll find an article in my RSS feeds for an amazing freeware application that has yet to be added to my site. This is the best free disk defragmentor app for Windows. In a review by TechRadar they gave Auslogics defrag app a 90% efficiency score. This is even more stunning when compared to the ever-popular Defraggler, which only received a 62% score.

Are you fed up with iTunes? Well when the installation for updates was getting to be about 70MB, I decided to find an alternative. Why make people download a 70MB file to apply an update your application? iTunes doesn't just have a large footprint, it is so slow! It shouldn't take five minutes to start up a media player and listen to your favorite album.

7-zip

7-zip

As far as file compression goes *.7z is one of the best. This application extends Windows' limited archive capabilities. I primarily use it for extracting archives that I download from the web. All Drupal modules and themes come packaged in a *.tar.gz ("tarball") archive, so I'm unarchiving a lot. The interface is very simple and uncomplicated. Extraction time is minimal, and the installer throws some nice options into the right-click context menu.

VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player

VLC is an amazing light-weight media player. It's pretty versatile and can handle most file types that you throw its way. I like it for its speed, though I would say that its decoders aren't the greatest. I've found much better quality with paid-for apps. But hey, for being free it's pretty powerful.

Just Color Picker

Just Color Picker
Download Link: Just Color Picker

I encounter so often a neat color on a website or desktop application and want to grab that color for use in my own graphics and applications.

As a color-deficient individual I find this program to have a peculiar usefulness. When I come across a neat color and want to figure out exactly what color it is (ie. via HTML Hexidecimal or some other like manner) I use this free little application. Just Color Picker will allow you to zero in on a pixel and copy the color code equivalent to your clipboard. It's a very handy little tool.

GIMP

GIMP
Download Link: GIMP

Gimp is an AWESOME image editing program. Though I'm sure I'm antagonizing a heated debate, Gimp is a sufficient alternative to Photoshop. So far I haven't come across a single feature that Photoshop has, that Gimp can't do, for free.

Disk Inventory X

Disk Inventory X

This program is basically a Mac alternative to the very helpful Windows program: Sequoia View. Both programs are used to display the sizes and types of files on a storage device in a graphical way called "treemaps". Specifically, using the language of Sequoia View, both apps display files and folders using "squarified treemaps". When you're concerned with unnecessary files consuming a lot of your hard disk space, these apps become invaluable to disk cleanup.

CPUZ

CPUZ
Download Link: CPUZ

I don't really like to feature programs that have an archaic interface, but a good majority of the more useful programs out there don't have stylish, web 2.0-ish user interfaces. While the interface for CPUZ may not look very attractive, it does have a place in the tech's toolbox.

Quicksilver

| Posted in
Quicksilver
Download Link: Quicksilver

Quicksilver is a speedy application launcher for the Mac. Of all the application launchers that I have tried for all platforms quicksilver is by far the absolute best. Speed is everything with an application launcher, and quicksilver earns its title. But quicksilver is not just your ordinary application launcher. It has hundreds of built-in and downloadable plug-ins that allow it to communicate and manipulate many different applications and file-system functions. Need to rename a file?

Process Explorer

Process Explorer
Download Link: Process Explorer

This is a really neat utility helpful for manually cleaning out viruses and spyware that can't be picked up by your Antivirus/Antispyware tools. For a really neat video on how to clean spyware check out Microsoft's Malware-Cleaning Webcast.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome
Download Link: Google Chrome

A few days ago a friend of mine asked me if I had tried out Google's new web browser. I didn't know about the release yet, and asked him to make sure he wasn't mistaken (as I had heard about several hoaxes). Well, he was right! Google released a browser last Sunday called Google Chrome.

SIW

SIW
Download Link: System Information for Windows

SIW is an advanced System Information for Windows tool that gathers detailed information about your system properties and settings and displays it in an extremely comprehensible manner.

SIW is so powerful it has the ability to recover lost passwords, show you your windows product key, your motherboard's PCI devices (useful for locating drivers), and perform several network commands.

Taskbar Shuffle

| Posted in
Taskbar Shuffle
Download Link: Taskbar Shuffle

Taskbar Shuffle is a neat system utility for Windows that allows you to organize the tasks in the taskbar by clicking and dragging them around. The program is very light-weight. You can choose to have it run at startup and hide in the background (free up some of those icons in the notification area). It has a splashscreen at startup which you can also disable. Another neat feature it includes is the ability to close a window by middle-clicking it (you can do that by clicking on the little scroll wheel on the mouse); this is a feature that is used in many web browsers to close tabs.

Autoruns

| Posted in
Autoruns
Download Link: Autoruns

Autoruns is a very useful little application. This program, much like msconfig, allows you to view and configure those application that are starting up with Windows.

Autoruns is much more advanced than msconfig and has "the most comprehensive knowledge of autostarting locations of any startup monitor".

You can also filter by verified/unverified applications, or if they're Microsoft/Third-Party. This filtering system tends to be useful when hunting for malware.

Notepad2

| Posted in
Notepad2
Download Link: Notepad2

Notepad2 is an awesome program for editing text files. There are a lot of free text editors out there dedicated to assisting programmers, but for my basic needs I prefer Notepad2. There are a few important things to note about Notepad2. First it was built in assemblers language, which is a lower level language (very hard to program in) but means that the program is very efficient and fast. The interface is similar to notepad so it is very easy to use. There is a convenient toolbar giving quick access to necessary functions.

Enso

| Posted in
Enso
Download Link: Enso

I hate to categorize Enso with other application launchers, because it is so much more than that. Enso attempts to connect computing with language. Enso appears to be rather original in its approach, but for those familiar, it breathes of language like Ubiquity and Application Launcher/Searcher like Quicksilver.
